Top Scorers |
The top scorers for Boro during their time at Ayresome Park are listed
below, season-by-season: |
The first prolific scorer for Boro was George
Elliott who topped the charts four times before the outbreak of
WWI. In the 1913/14 season Elliott became the first Boro player to
be top scorer in Division 1, when he scored 31 league goals.
He went on to score 213 goals for Boro in a career that spanned 16
years from 1909 to 1925. |
Other names of note in this period were Alf
Common, the first £1000 transfer from Sunderland, and Steve
Bloomer, a £750 signing from Derby County. |

| WWI |
The period between WWI and WWII was dominated
by the phenomenal George Camsell, who scored 345 goals in 453
matches for Boro. In the 1926/27 season Camsell scored an
incredible 59 goals in just 37 games. The record was broken the
following season by the great Dixie Dean, who scored 60 for
Everton, however, the Boro star started two games less! |
Following his debut season in 1925/26 the
Durham born player was Boro's top scorer for ten consecutive
seasons, until a young Mickey Fenton took over prior to the
outbreak of WWII. Camsell spent over twenty years at Boro, and
after playing a handful of matches during WWII, he hung up his
boots and joined the Ayresome Park staff. |
After WWI George Elliott had continued where he
left off before the war, and was top scorer for three of the seven
seasons, before he retired in 1925. |

Mickey Fenton followed in a similar fashion to
George Elliott and continued where he had left off before the war,
being top scorer for three consecutive seasons after the war. |
The next prolific scorer would be a certain
Brian Clough who scored 202 goals in 222 games over a six year
period, before his move to Sunderland in 1961, where his career
would be cut short through injury. |
In more recent times there were major
contributions from John Hickton and Bernie Slaven who topped the
charts for six and five consecutive seasons respectively. |
